Fall Musical “Once Upon a Mattress” opens Friday

Carly Berglund, Assistant Editor

The cast of New Prague High School’s production of “Once Upon A Mattress” is almost ready for a great show this weekend! Senior Becca Walsh plays the female lead, Princess Winnifred, alongside junior Ian Hanson, who portrays Prince Dauntless.

This production is directed by Ben Thietje. He has a lot of experience directing NPHS Theatre and believes he has directed “somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-15 musicals” at NPHS.

Thietje wants people to come see this show because of the good music and funny writing.

When Erica Goulson, who plays Queen Aggravain, was asked how she would rename the show, she responded, “Where did they get all these mattresses?”

Come see “Once Upon A Mattress” at NPHS this weekend and next weekend if you want to find out.

Wondering if the show is for you? Here is a summary.  If you thought you knew the story of ‘The Princess and The Pea,’ you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken’s love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn’t the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you’ll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.
